farmdoc's blog post number 497

In the list of Farmdoc’s Blog tags, ‘Sweetheart Vivienne’ has the biggest tally (as she deserves) followed by ‘F1’. I’ve written that ‘Prima facie, motor racing’s environmental lunacy. Also that ‘It’s time, I believe, for all motor racing to end. Currently its disadvantages to our planet outweigh its advantages. It cannot be permitted to continue for the titillation of a self indulgent minority. It must be viewed and dealt with as immoral’ . Subsequently I was heartened by a Formula 3 car running on biofuel – to wit chocolate waste. But cars running on biofuel still produce CO2. This week I’ve been even more buoyed by news about Formula Zero [FZ] – a new race class for vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Founded in Amsterdam in 2003, FZ has begun with go-karts. It’s planning to scale up to a full size racing class by 2015. Currently its six teams are from top universities. And in August/September 2009 it’s running a championship series of four European races – on modular circuits in high profile locations. How exciting. Literally zero emissions – apart from water, that is. And no noise. None. Imagine a car race without deafening screaming engines. Watch here to learn more and to hear FZ’ s founder’s optimism. He says FZ is ‘Racing for the future’. I hope he’s prescient. I’ d love FZ to be the true future of motor sport. I’ll be following its progress. With interest.
