farmdoc's blog post number 390

Elite. As a noun, it’s defined as ‘A group or class of persons enjoying superior intellectual or social or economic status’. I don’t like elites of any type. No. That’s wrong. I detest them. I think members of elites are self-important, self-congratulatory, power-hungry, and dismissive of lesser mortals. But probably from time immemorial, societies of all types have included elites. To their considerable detriment, I’d suggest. And as if Australia hasn’t got enough elites already, 10 days ago a new one was born when 45 invitees gathered for the inaugural meeting of the Melbourne Forum. This is how it was reported in Melbourne and Sydney. Clearly the chosen 45 are not a random sample of society. They’re already powerful public figures. I wonder what they want to achieve by grouping into the Melbourne Forum. I’ll bet you anything you like that their main aim is to further their own interests. And that any intention they have towards lesser mortals, is via the trickle-down (aka piss-down) effect. The operative word here being ‘down’. Which is the direction the tall poppy (pictured) looks at the short poppies. These 45 people were invited. They weren’t voted by the population at large in a general election. The Melbourne Forum reeks of a potential plutocratic oligarchy. For that reason I hope its life is short. Very short.
